This is one of our "Old Favorites" of the birds that visit our feeders every year!
Colorful and Quiet are their outstanding features!
Image
This is a male Red Crossbill!

If you take walks through the pine woods you might notice bits of pinecones falling silently around you!
If this happens please be sure to look up.
You might find that the source is Red Crossbills cracking pinecones!

I will promise to give you a photo of the female Red Crossbills as soon as they get here!
When they bring their newly hatched babies you will see that their young bills have not yet crossed.
They will surely get the "knack" of popping open black oil sunflower seeds fairly soon!

Thanks,

BGR

Steller’s Jays, Chickadees, and the little Pygmies. A newer favorite is the Western Tanager. I’ve had a pair for a few years, now. Just love those bright colors! I had wanted to see some for many years. Plus all types of Grosbeaks.

I’ve not been here long enough to have old favorites but I’m enjoying my new neighbors.
A pair each of Cassins finches, pine Siskins and magpies come to the porch feeders.
A folk of Evening grosbeaks I only see in the mornings on the side of the house and bluebirds in the open meadow. There’s also a pair of pine grosbeaks in a ponderosa on the property.

Without a doubt my favorite bird here is the Hermit Thrush. Only here from about early May- early July their song signals the beginning of summer. beautiful echo sound to their song. I just copied this photo, I can't get close enough to this small bird to get a shot. Maybe BGRs can get or have a good one.

I just love the pygmy Nuthatches (pigs my husband and I call them). They are the most entertaining birds to me. Most birds will only drink from my basin alone or sit at the feeder alone. Not the pigs. Once we had 5 pigs in a row, sitting on the side of the water basin, all dipping to drink in synchrony, like the swimmers.

Or, even though they are the smallest birds, pigs have no fear and will land next to a chickadee or nuthatch and take their place.

But the bestest time to watch the pigs is in the fall when the current bushes have their red berries. The berries that are in the sun ferment and the pigs love them! They hang upside down on branches, fly erratically, and seem to be having a really good time.

Nice pics everyone. These guys are getting to be my favorite. Fun to watch them "squabble" with each other at the feeder 8)

Used to be Meadowlark but up here I don't see any so Red Wing Blackbird, like their call and watching their funny showing of red patches and little dance for the girls. They are not here yet, maybe soon.

I love my nuthatches...I think they look like nuns! I am not fond of the siskins as they seem to just sit at the feeders, not share and throw seed to the ground. I have had Jays come to the house on a regular basis at a certain time to get their evening peanuts. I love all of them, just not fond of the siskins or the 4 legged brown furry bird feeder thieves, although I don't mind the darker ones with the tufts on their ears!!! I love the Eberts!!!

Resurrecting this thread. I think my old fav's are the wrens who are making nests right now. They're just so tiny, loud and fearless. Gotta admire them. I don't feed them since they like insects and there are plenty with the millers and stink bugs. I saw my first bluebird yesterday. Like seeing them too, let me know it's spring. The robins show up the earliest, when it's still wintery up here. I always have herds of magpies these days and some stellar jays. Never saw them here before a few years ago--climate?

I like Wrens too. So tiny but what a big burst of song. I put a decorative house by my deck and to my delight, a Wren built her nest in it. I cleaned it all out and put it out again next spring but no bird came that time. Sure enjoyed that tiny wren & babies.

I love them all!! We have so many varieties and I enjoy watching them all mingle together at the feeders. Along with the squirrels and chipmunks!
