Prescribed fire escapes and burns an additional 300 acres 15 miles NE of Grover CO.

A prescribed fire 15 miles northeast of Grover, Colorado escaped today at noon when winds picked up and gusts exceeded 36 miles per hour. At least three hundred unplanned additional acres were burned. Approximately 100-150 acres were on private land. Twenty fire fighters are on scene.

The fire was contained at 1:30 p.m. and control of the fire is expected at sundown today. Two to three power poles were burned. No structures were threatened although, as a safety precaution, an engine was parked at a home near the fire.

The objectives of the prescribed fire were to improve mountain plover nesting habitat and to reintroduce fire into the shortgrass prairie ecosystem.
