The city of Boulder Fire and Open Space and Mountain Parks departments plan to conduct the first prescribed burns of the fall season as early as Monday, Sept. 20. An open house to discuss the burns is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, at the Open Space and Mountain Parks administration building, 66 South Cherryvale Road.

Four forest burns (total of 165 acres) and two grassland burns (total of 31 acres) are possible. Crews have prepped the burn sites, removing heavy concentrations of small diameter trees, limbed standing trees, and chipped or scattered the cut limbs. The burns will only be conducted if weather conditions are appropriate.

?Prescribed burns is still one of the most cost effective land management tools we have,? said Wildland Fire Division Chief Marc Mullenix. ?They provide multiple benefits to the natural resources and wildlife that cannot be created with any other means.?

Benefits of prescribed fire include removing dead vegetation, returning nutrients to the soil, reducing noxious weeds and negative effects of unwanted wildfires. Prescribed burns also provide valuable research and hands-on training and coordination for area firefighters and resource managers.

Spring and fall are the typical prescribed fire seasons. Fire managers also consider potential negative smoke impacts for public safety, contingency plans and preparations to reduce the threat of an escaped fire, and wildlife and resource concerns. Residents adjacent to the burn areas have already been notified.

Burn day information and a listing of prescribed burns is offered on the Boulder Fire Department Web site at www.ci.boulder.co.us/fire/wildfire/wildfire.htm or the city wildland fire information line at (303) 441-4060 ext. 549.
