From FB 285 traveler page:

This is to clarify the area/situation on the lane closure due to the disintegrating shoulder on N. 285

“ Just an FYI to give you more specifics about the N bound right lane, the 1 lane starts just after Indian hills, and the actual chunk of shoulder missing is right there where the big crane looking thing is and the Marine flag. If someone knows what that crane thing is please enlighten me. Stay safe, there's adequate warning about the lane closure”

Image

“looking at it from farther up the road before you get to it, a huge chunk of the mountain side washed away. They’re going to have a heck of a time shoring it back up!”

“they may have to drive piling into the ground to secure the foundation”

“agreed. Some serious engineering will be needed to fix that. Could be quite a while”

“saw that the other day and was a little freaked out over how MUCH washed out! Big job for sure”

“ Traffic through the lane closure on 285 through the canyon has gotten progressively worse each day this week. Today it was hardly moving in places. Plan ahead for that.”

It's been a while since we had a 'zipper merge' or 'road rage' thread but this could be it.

From the FB 285 traveler page:

Image

"After driving by almost 2 miles of stopped cars before arriving at the merge point I thought my fellow commuters needed this reminder."

"You beat me too this post. Had the same thought the last two mornings."

"Only chowderheads compete at the merge. If you made your choice early, just live with it."

"If you drove past 2 miles of cars and haven't merged by the time you get to me, you aren't merging in front of me. You saw the same sign I did 2 miles ago. I will make sure you sit or hit cones"

"Yeah but people are too stupid to realize that this IS the proper way to merge. They just think you’re being a jerk and passing them all."

The post about the zipper merge is completely correct. I'm rather taken aback at the hostility expressed about people who do it this way. Really, folks, take a deep breath and share the road. We live in paradise; this delay is unavoidable; and we'll all get there eventually. Just take turns and let people merge, and if you throw in a smile and wave you and the other driver will arrive where you're going much happier.

Nope, but the fur would be flying on FB if the page admins didn’t turn off commenting …

People actually think it’s their duty and right to straddle the paint and keep others from using both lanes.
And the predictable, you’re not getting in front of me because I moved over at the first merge sign two miles back…

It boggles the mind … :scrambles:

How can people still not get or see the obvious ….

My Pa had a saying that if I heard him say it once, I heard him say it a thousand time . . . "Common sense isn't common" . . .

FWIW, I actually agree with NOT allowing people to merge early and ONLY allowing them to move over near the convergence point to ensure the utilization of both lanes until that point when traffic is crawling due to volume. What causes the frustration is the early mergers holding up both lanes until they get in, followed by a rapid movement in one lane after the bottleneck is cleared.

Stay off your phones and stay close enough to the car in front of you that no one from the other lane can get into yours until the convergence point, at which point you open up enough space for ONE car to enter the lane in front of you, maybe 30-40 feet from the convergence point. If you let a 4-5 car length gap open up in front of you a half mile or a couple hundred feet before then, of COURSE someone, probably multiple someones, is going to try and fill that gap from the other lane. If you see someone stopped in the other lane with their blinker on trying to get over early . . . don't let them in. Eventually they will get tired of the horns honking behind them and start moving again, leaving everyone is exactly the same position in the queue until the convergence point.

But yeah, if I know that traffic is going to be converging into the left hand lane, you can bet your last fiat nickel that I'll be staying in the right lane until the convergence point . . . it's only common sense to choose the lane that will leave you crawling along for the shortest amount of time due to the lack of common sense present in a fair percentage of the other drivers, right? :duck:

I’m just so grateful to God that I can work up here.

This section of road will not be an easy fix. I hope it doesn’t continue to disintegrate in all this rain.

I wonder how the compromised section Bear the Mt. Club that they stuffed sone dirt under is faring ? 8O

The last couple of days through the canyon have been fine. Very little delay. Quite orderly and smooth.
