My thoughts and prayers go out to the Beck family who lost their home last week. I'm wondering what would cause a propane tank to explode. In one of the news clips it looked like there was an intact propane tank in front of the house. Years ago during a high fire season, the then Elk Creek Fire Chief told me that propane tanks don't explode. Since then it seems that propane tanks can explode during a wildfire, but for one to explode and start a fire seems unusual. Does anyone have more information about this fire?

This morning, a pile of smoldering slash with a lot of smoke and strong smell was reported. I didn't hear of an explosion on the scanner.

Thanks AL. The first story I looked at from CBS said one of the owners, who was out of the country, was the one who stated the fire was caused by the propane tank exploding. When I went back and looked at the other news stories, they all said the cause of the fire was under investigation. I hope the one person who was injured is recovering.

I am so nervous about that that I hope to never need to get one. We have oxygen on much of the time. Steve told me to never strike a match to burn candles. That's unsettling to me.

Propane tanks don't just explode.

It takes a lot to get a propane tank to explode, even in a fire. It may have been caused by a propane leak in the house, but I seriously doubt the tank exploded.

That's why they have pressure relief valves.
