Jefferson County Sheriff's Office

Traffic Alert From CDOT

Structural and Drainage Repairs on Four Bridges Along US Highway 285

JEFFERSON COUNTY - On March 25, the Colorado Department of Transportation and ABCO Contracting, Inc. began repairs to four bridges located on US Highway 285 from Mile Post (MP) 235 to MP 239.

The crew will repair the bridge decks as well as drainage in the medians. Work is expected to take place until late July 2019. During this time, single-lane closures will occur Monday-Friday on southbound US 285 and northbound US 285 at the following times:

March-May

Southbound US 285 single-lane closure: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Northbound US 285 single-lane closure: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

June-July

Southbound US 285 single-lane closure: 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Northbound US 285 single-lane closure: 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

When the road closures are in place, the speed limit will be reduced to 45 miles per hour. As a result, slight delays are expected. The repairs done at this time will preserve each bridge’s structure as well as extend their lifespan by improving drainage.

The four bridges are located at:

South Turkey Creek Road and US 285
Conifer Road and US 285
Pleasant Park Road and US 285*
Kennedy Gulch Road and US 285
Currently the mitigation of bird nests has been successfully completed prior to the arrival of the migratory birds.

*On the Pleasant Park Road bridge (and only this bridge), wall repairs will also take place. These repairs include removing and replacing portions of the structure wingwall.

Necessary work and at least CDOT is attempting to minimize the impact to commute times.

Agreed: they did a pretty good job of minimizing impact to drivers. :-)

Seems they're doing what they can by opening up southbound by 1.

I suppose this counts as 285 work. They are re-striping 285 through Bailey.

Again? I wonder what the plan is this time. The last wasn't so popular.

It appears as if they are adding lines for a left turn lane in addition to the straight through and right turn lane, which will help.

The nice smooth concrete surface on highway 285 over the four Conifer bridges is currently being removed by roto milling the concrete and then replacing it with an asphalt overlay. I was wondering why, here is the reason:

"The existing bridge concrete overlays have been examined and were determined to have aspects of structural deficiency. The overlays are being rotomilled off and a new waterproofing membrane is being installed over the milled deck to protect the existing bridge structure from further damage and extend the life of bridge by many years. A new asphalt overlay is then installed over the waterproofing membrane system. Between this work and the new median drainage improvements , these four bridges will have a significantly longer life span and create safer traveling conditions for the public."

I'd like to see all of that horrible grooved, concrete pavement replaced with asphalt. As for the construction crew, I've had no problem with their work, they've done a great job minimizing the impacts to traffic.
