Pretty cool to watch, but a staggering reminder of what can happen to even the most experienced:

Quote:
SILVERTON, Colo. — ...The incident happened on Saturday January 5, in the Upper Senator Beck Basin, northwest of Red Mountain Pass.

It was a very unusual situation, as the incident happened during the second day of a three-day advanced avalanche safety course, and all six skiers involved were experienced in the winter backcountry.

If I am not mistaken, Telluride had 2 more avalanches last week as well.

In case you're wondering what it feels like to be buried by one. 8O In a word: TERRIFYING :yikes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIqnThjTNfI

A camera mounted a skier’s helmet captured the moment he was buried by an avalanche during a trip to Guardsman Pass in Park City, Utah, on February 16,
before he was rescued by two companions.

Thanks for that post Koala1. It quickly sets up like concrete for those trapped. I was on the avalanche rescue team in 1975 for recovery of one of my best friends on Monarch Pass. Grew up across the street from Keith since the 1st grade. That was a hard lesson and learning curve for avalanches.

An average of 25 people a year die in snow avalanches every year in Colorado (not including the hockey players  )!

AL, the 25 deaths per year is a U.S. average. For Colorado, the average number of fatalities is around 5 per year (276 deaths over the past 66 years) which is the highest for all U.S. states.

A quote from one of those articles:
Quote:
CDOT said not enough snow made it onto the roadway to impact any drivers.

I don't know, I would think that visibility instantly going to zero would be a significant impact to me as a driver!
