OMG how things change so quickly.

What has happened to Nic Petit?? I come home from a long day and he is in 7th. He has been resting outside Shatloolik all day while other mushers pass him.

Apparently two of his dogs got in a fight. There are okay physically. But now the team does not want to run.

So Nic is honoring his dogs resistance to run. Good for him, but it will cost him the lead and may cost him the entire race.

Peter Kaiser is currently in the lead closely followed by Joar and then Jessie Royer. All 3 are currently resting in Koyuk. Mitch Seavy is about 25 miles behind in 4th. Then comes Jessie Holmes in 5th and Aliy Zirkle in 6th.

Jeff King is currently on his way to Shaktoolik in 17th place.
Martin Buser is currently on his way to Unalakleet in 31st place.

Five mushers have scratched from the race so far.

I sure wish Iditarod.com would post some updates.
It seems they are having some technical difficulties.

Looks like perhaps Nic Petit is heading back to Shaktoolik. OMG I hope he and his dogs are okay. :praying:

If the tracker is working correctly (which I question) it appears that Matt Failor may have traveled backwards for awhile too. Is there a snow storm? Wonder what is going on...

I need to sleep now, I'm so exhausted ... but I better to stay home tomorrow to figure out what the heck is happening out there on the trail.

Oh doggie poop, Nic Petit scratched. Too bad his dogs gave up on the race. Good for Nic in respecting his dogs' wishes and not forcing them to run.

Nic is the 7th to scratch this year.

Top Mushers positions

POS MUSHER (Bib#) CHKPNT
1 Peter Kaiser (9) Out of Elim
2 Joar Leifseth Ulsom (28) Out of Elim
3 Jessie Royer (14) Out of Elim
4 Aliy Zirkle (19) Out of Koyuk
5 Jessie Holmes (5) Out of Koyuk
6 Matt Hall (3) Out of Koyuk
7 Mitch Seavey (32) Out of Koyuk
8 Travis Beals (51) In to Koyuk
9 Paige Drobny (40) In to Koyuk
10 Aaron Burmeister (38) In to Koyuk

They keep saying that Jessie Holmes is right behind Aliy on the way to Elim. But the tracker indicates he returned to Koyuk. I hope he is okay.

That's too bad. That would be tough to take, but the best know when to call it a day. Good example of the care these people have for the dogs.

:yeah that:

I can't imagine how devastated Nic must be. To go from being the clear leader to scratching :thud:
Coupled with last years troubles in that same stretch of the race. He's not my favorite musher (altho he is VERY entertaining!) but my heart breaks for him and his dogs.

Now I am worried about Jessie Holmes. He is one of my favs (right after Aliy). He was clearly in position to be in the top 10 and maybe even the top five. He has been at Koyuk for almost 12 hours now. This indicates to me there might be some issues with his dogs. Gosh I hope not that would be too sad.

He did say yesterday (or was it the day before?) that he personally was having issues with sleep deprivation. Maybe his delay is related to that? I hope iditarod.com can give us an update on him soon.

Pete Kaiser is at White Mountain starting his mandatory 8 hr rest. Joar is just a mile or two out. And Jessie Royer is about 25 miles from White MT. I hope she can catch up after the 8hr rest. But both Pete and Joar have been much faster than her through this storm.

The winner will likely arrive in Nome early tomorrow morning.

Aliy is on her way to White Mt. Still in 4th place!

Jeff King has left Koyuk in 12th place.

No word yet on what's happened to Jessie Holmes.

Pete and Joar have left White Mt in first and second place, respectively.

It is typically 8-11 hours to the finish line from White Mt. So maybe I'll get to see the leader finish in the morning.

But many years the race has turned upside down for the leader(s) as they travel that final section of the race. Just ask Jeff King.

No kidding. I can understand the sleep deprivation, too. You get to the point you're staggering and nod off on your feet.

Thanks for the updates. I've had about 27 distractions, so haven't been able to follow it very closely, this year.

I would love to see Aliy's name tomorrow morning!

Yay! These teams are tough athletes. The humans are pretty good, too.

I am also very happy to see Lance Mackey doing well. He has had some health issues to overcome, but I would have to say he has! Way to go!
