A year or two later I tried the fermentation technique and my germination rate was 9 out of 10 or better. But the tomatoes I got were not very good (the original maters were probably either a hybrid or they got cross pollinated in a not beneficial way). Since then I have either taken cuttings or purchased seeds or starter plants. Iterseting i never really tried it like that or maybe the hour i leave them flouting in the water prior to rinsing and then drying, ferments them. and I'm just unaware TillerBee I understand why you'd try every technique possible. Your Dad's Thumb tomatoes are very special. I wish you the best of luck so that you can keep that particular strain going. I don't use the plastic bag over the mater cuttings as I have had problems with mold or the leaves turning too light of a green. I have had better luck with maters not using the bag (but I boost the humidity in my house all winter long). Also, I make sure that my mater cuttings are submerged half way up the stem so that at least two nodes are submerged at all times. Typically all the cuttings survive the winter. The tricky part is when the cuttings are put into soil. Sometimes I loose one at that stage. _________________ If you think OSHA is a small town in Wisconsin...your in trouble. All good info everyone and will be curious to see what works for ya TB.
I let them ferment for 4 days and removed the moldy goo from the top. Then rinsed the heck outta em and let them dry on a paper plate. Next batch I will just rinse them off and let them dry. See what happens! _________________ Enjoy life, laugh often and fish till you drop! And garden when ya can... |

See what happens! Say no to rinsing.. just take them out of tomatoe and lay on a paper towel spread apart.. _________________ Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right. The paper towel method worked for me many years. The fruit may be a hybrid good or bad, unless you only grew one type or separated your plants with tightly spun row covers. But that is another story. Remember keep it simple.
