We just moved in and noticed dozens of bees (on a warm day) going in and out of a crack in the house. My husband found an abandoned hive about the size of a basketball under the deck near this location so I can only imagine what is up there.

Any suggestions, help, or referrals would be MUCH appreciated. And I though the leak through the ceiling was our welcome home gift...

Are they bees? (slightly fuzzy) or hornets? (no hair). If bees, I may be able to help. I have a bee suit and a smoker.

If Sharpened Axe can't get them, we recommend Golden Service, 303 670 4653. They did a great job for us a year ago. They do use pesticides, so be forewarned, but they can get places where beekeepers may not be able to.

Good luck, a gnarly problem to have :(

Bee's are protected. Have a bee keeper come and get them.

a hive about the size of a basketball sounds like wasps to me (not bees) - call in the pros -

If it is round and looks taupe or grey and papery in texture it is a wasps nest. An exterminator would be your best bet. Wasps, hornets, yellow jackets all have a thin "waist" and a shiney exoskeleton. Honey bees are golden and fuzzy.

Bees usually will build inside the walls. Sounds like paper wasps to me? Is the "hive" kind of pretty and looks like grayish tree bark?

Thanks for posting that, VH. We had a swarm of bees a couple of years ago that settled between our exterior paneling and the dining room wall. Pinecam poster COBeeMan and Mrs COBeeMan graciously came to my home on their own time and determined that they could not get the bees...most beekeepers are not equipped to do removals that involve tearing apart structures...so we had to take the sad step of calling a professional before we had bees in the house. There were easily a couple hundred swarming outside my kitchen window every day.

I do not advocate euthanizing bees, though there are situations where a beekeeper may not be able to help. I agree, this sounds like wasps, call a professional!
