Did you know the oldest surviving feature on the property is the Civil War Well. Research has suggested that it is the oldest surviving well in Colorado. It was hand dug and completed in 1862. The watering hole served as a popular stopping place on the toll road from Ken Caryl to Conifer and points west. The first post office was established at this historic crossroads in May, 1865 as Hutchinson. The name of the post office was changed to Conifer in 1894.
1. The Civil War Well completed 1862
2. The Civil War Well with the new five post design 1950s
3. The Civil War Well in a sorry state earlier last year.
4. The Civil War Well rebuilt this year in April

Nicely done!
One note: Ken Caryl Ranch was known as Bradford back then. |

Now I'll demonstrate my stupidity but I have wondered about this so I'm asking....how exactly does one hand-dig a well? It is my understanding that it was accomplished with a hole that was dug progressively deeper and the men climbed into it by ladder. The dirt was scooped into buckets and hauled to the surface. If anyone knows more precisely, please chime in here. _________________ What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls a butterfly. |

Thank you both! That is truly incredible and adds dimension (so to speak) to the task of drilling the well at Yellow Barn. It must have taken years.
