We found this large bizarre moth resting on our wall on Conifer Mountain. Can anyone take a guess at identifying it?

I believe that is a Cecropia moth.

Its hard to tell from the picture angle but I don't believe that its a Cecropia moth. The abdomen is the wrong shape. It could be an Underwing or Sphinx moth. The wng colors and pattern would definately tell you it is though.

We happened to visit the Denver Museum of Nature and Science yesterday and they have a butterfly and moth exhibit on the bottom level. The Sphinx moth (or some variant?) seems to be the closest match based on the moths they had displayed.

Thank you for the replies.

Looks like a Miller moth to me that comes every spring, closer to summer up here. Heard they were really bad out on the eastern plains this spring. They usually show up when the yuccas are in bloom.

Cecropias have much more fan shaped antennae.

sphinx moth. I saw a cecropia on a garage wall in Crow Valley, it was 6 inches across, no kidding. Careful on Crow Valley Road, Hamm! It had just emerged and its siblings were drying out nearby on the same wall.
