I should still be around in June of next year................. I guess this explains the confusion Quote: The frequency of a full moon occurring at perigee is around once every 412 days. However, the occurrence of a 'perfect' supermoon, when the full moon occurs at almost the exact same time as perigee, is much rarer, at around once every 18.6 years - Thanks Wikipedia!!

I had to get up before 4 this morning and there she was, hovering between Logan and Rosalie, low in the western sky, wearing some cloud strings like a feather boa. It was cool to see. I slept well for a few more hours.

there is a perigee evey lunar cycle (28 - 29.3 days), but a perigee coinsiding with a full moon is closer to the 400 day mark (haven't read that, but the calculations show it). according to this chart, the next 'super moon' is next year! maybe that 18 yr reference is for the exact time of day, not just same day - next year's perigee/full moon both happen on June 23, 2013, (11:11 and 11:34, 23 minutes in between) and the next is Aug 10, 2014 (17:44 and 18:11 - 25 min separate them)
that 18 yr reference must refer to both events happening at the same MINUTE - doubt if any of us could tell the difference! http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/pacalc.html |

this super moon was only a minute apart (perigee and full moon) - maybe that's what's making this one special, and won't be like this for another 18 yrs - I can't seem to find any website that explains it -
but here's from NASA's science page: Quote: Super perigee Moons are actually fairly common. The Moon becomes full within a few hours of its closest approach to Earth about once a year on average. The last such coincidence occurred on March 19th, 2011, producing a full Moon that was almost 400 km closer than this one.
http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/sc ... supermoon/ does anyone have a website that explains the 18 yr super moon? |
