Our big move day to Bailey is getting close-Mothers Day Weekend (I don't think there could be a better present for this mother!).

Anyhow, I'm planning on bringing my small flock of sheep with me. I need to know what people in the hills do to keep their flock safe from predators.

My plan is to use the existing 4 foot page wire fencing, add electric to the outside, and add motion lights to the side of the barn. I do have a pyr dog that is out with the sheep -I'm not sure if he's very aggressive but he definitely has a bark that might keep predators at bay.

Do I need to electrify the bottom of the fence too? Has anyone had problems with predators digging? Should I plan on closing my sheep in for the nights?

All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Definitely lock 'em up EVERY night and I'm afraid few fences would be high enough to deter a lion. Your best warning is the dog which I assume is with the sheep during the day. Frankly, your greatest threat may well come from loose neighborhood dogs!
Welcome, and good luck.

We have goats and llamas. We have regular 2x4 inch fencing to five feet, two strands of electric poly-tape around the top of the fence to seven feet and one strand of poly-tape around the bottom. We have motion detector lights, too, but the one thing that keeps everyone safe is that we lock them in at night. Every night.

Got it-lock them up! I currently live in TX and the coyotes are thick as thieves -I lock my sheep up every night or put them in a chain link pen right beside (as in touching) my house) with the dog.

We have a stable on the new property but when the horses move up there the sheep will need a new house...can you share pics of what you use to lock your sheep/goats in at night? Is it something that actually keeps critters out ie locked up tight?

I don't have a photo, but we have a 10x10 barn for 10 goaties. It has a Pella window on each side that can slide open. The door is largish, and we shut it with a 2x4 bar across it. You could probably purchase a kit from Home Depot with the same result -- just make sure there is ventilation around the top where the walls and roof meet and the roof has to handle snow load.
