Here's a goal for us to surpass as a county: http://inhabitat.com/german-village-pro ... -it-needs/

Park County needs jobs, needs a better identity in Colorado and I'd love to see this concept gather support - because if they can do it, why can't we better it?

Quote:
Ok, those Germans are just showing off now. Not only has the nation announced plans to shut down all of its nuclear power plants and started the construction of 2,800 miles of transmission lines for its new renewable energy initiative, but now the village of Wildpoldsried is producing 321% more energy than it needs! The small agricultural village in the state of Bavaria is generating an impressive $5.7 million in annual revenue from renewable energy.

I'm wondering if some of the high winds could cause so much damage to wind turbines that it would make an installation uneconomic.

New turbines are designed to handle very rigorous winds. Turbines up at the NREL Wind Site outside of Boulder routinely experience 80 mpg gust and they hold up just fine.

The bigger issue with turbines is wind predictability. XCEL has some really cool wind forecasting tools, developed in conjunction with NREL, but they are site specific and would need to study locations to develop models for that area.

It can be done, if Park Co. wants to get involved, it would have to convince IREA it is a good idea. Good luck ...

In my corner of WY, we have those big Excel wind turbines and they get hit with hurricane force winds. No big deal. I haven't looked into them much, being off grid and all, but it appears that they can shut them down entirely when they want.

Are we willing to make the social changes they made in order to take the first step? If we can say yes what else is going to hold us back?

There is lots of work going on on how to store extra energy.

Fuel cells and convert to gas:
