Although there have been a number of commercial building collapses in the Anchorage area, fortunately this is the first house collapse...but perhaps not the last, as there are still 4 to 6 weeks or so until "breakup." Anchorage building officials are especially concerned about older buildings and commercial buildings with flat-topped roofs.
The circumstances which contributed to this particular collapse were the age of the house (1960, well before there were any building codes in the area) and the fact that the house was vacant with the heat turned off (so absolutely no melting of the accumulated snow on the roof). Gonna be a real mess when all this stuff melts... |

My niece sold her half of this house to her ex, who let it go into foreclosure so it is bank owned now. Her ex moved to Florida but I bet the bank will be on him like stink on a skunk now. They will have to just level the place. A legal nightmare.
