Is this cleared with PC Animal Control?
Maybe so & I don't recall seeing the SO requesting it-
but if not-
with all your concern you could just be compounding the problems.

I firmly believe if the SO needed stuff to help provide for these poor creatures-
they'd ask-
they know there is much concern for this situation & many willing to help.

Y'all, this is getting crazy out of control.
The speculation, accusations & innuendos are waaaay over the top.
That's not helping the horses at all.

I strongly suggest that folks take a collective breath & let the authorities do their jobs.
Questioning their roles is certainly not going to solve anything or help the horses.
Please.

In my opinion it is not the authorities that are at fault at the end of the day. It is the owners who knowingly do not feed their horses and cattle for one reason or another. Not pointing fingers at any one individual, i have noticed a growing "epidemic" up here with "sick" and malnourished horses. Just yesterday 14 dead horses have been found at a ranch up here, and there is no reason other than the owner did not want/care to feed these guys this winter. Winter isn't over, we still have a few more months, all it takes is food and water and none of this would happen. I do hope that the horses in this case are eventually taken care of, by their owner or by the state, i would like to see them healthy and happy and horses should be whatever the outcome is for the owner. And as far as the rest of the people that let sick horses and cattle starve out their days because they live on a "ranch", get a grip and buy some hay.

The authorities will do as they can, and take the legal measures in all of these cases. You can't rush the law, of course an hour without resolution is too long for those of us waiting on the verdict. Be patient, feed your animals, and stay warm. That is all any one of us can do.

Wow, 14 dead horses. Starved it sounds like. Hay is so expensive it's no wonder people can't afford to buy it in many cases. It's sad these people could not reach out and ask or even beg for some hay. Many would have done something to help. I hope the owner shot them and didn't allow them to take the long hard road of starvation. Sometimes you just have to know when it's time to allow an animal to get their angel wings. If they were starved I hope the authorities will press charges. Another sad case :(

Well, here is the latest - this is the original story about the horses, not the 14 horses that was referenced above.

Park County Sheriff’s Office
Sheriff Fred Wegener
P.O. Box 604
Fairplay, Colorado 80440
719-836-2494

Press Release up-date February 23, 2012

The Park County Sheriff’s Office had worked with the owner’s of the horses to
have them placed in a safe location where they would be out of the elements and
could receive the care they needed. The owner’s of the horses were cooperative
and voluntarily agreed to allow us to remove their horses.

This morning the horses were officially seized under court order by the Park
County Sheriff’s Office Code Enforcement Division. We felt the horses had
improved enough to be transported. The six horses were placed at a location
outside of Park County. The undisclosed location has on site veterinarians, to
monitor their conditions and attend to their needs. Due to the attention this
case has generated the facility has requested to remain anonymous. We will honor
their request.

The Sheriff’s Office received a preliminary report on the horse that died at the
Echo Valley Ranch. The necropsy determined the cause of death was due to a
bacterial abscess near the horse’s heart. So in this case, it was an infection
that killed the horse, however, we feel that the owner’s of the horses should
have contacted a qualified veterinarian much earlier than they did. The six
horses that were seized have shown improvement since being removed from the Echo
Valley Ranch. The fact that they are all improving is a good sign. The horses
are now the responsibility of the Park County Sheriff’s Office. We have
received numerous calls from good folks who want to help these little horses
out. We appreciate all your concern and your willingness to help. Interested
persons can contact Sergeant Bobbi Priestly at 719-836-2494. Thanks again for
all the offers of assistance.

The owner’s of the horses will be charged with three counts each of animal
cruelty.

Thanks for posting the update Loritfp. I hope this settles everything on this thread.

Nice to hear the horses are responding positively to proper care and shelter.

The Flume should publish what happens to the people involved. In the past the DA seems to settle these cases out of court, even when there are multiple charges. This case may be no different, monetary fines and probation.

I am so glad that those horses are now thriving and being taken care of. In the case of the 14 dead, they were all starved to death not humanly put to rest. I am not at mercy to give out names as to point fingers. Just an example of the ongoing problem, the appropriate people know the whos and wheres and when someone far above myself feels the public should know about this "rancher" then so be it.

So, is the sheriff's office handling the case of the 14 dead horses?

I am just wondering if the remaining horses that survived will be put up for adoption eventually.

It doesn't "settle" a single thing for me.
