You can also use a small spray bottle filled with water for teaching him " no " Just a light spritz and a firm no, and they learn. I have a huge big boy, that loves to stand in the sink with the water running on his head and drink forever, but he was trained with a spray bottle and most of the time if he is misbehaving, all we have to do is pick up the spray bottle now and he understands. :rof laughing:

That is a great idea ravenous - and I have just the right little bottle. I'll give that a try also.

I would be careful, You don't want to chase the little off and a water bottle does tend to [urine] off a cat. I have only used it in DIRE situations and rarely in lifetime of kitty servitude.

The spray bottle is a form of negative reinforcement. I wouldn't recommend it and in my experience it's not effective. You build an adversarial relationship with your pet and they can actually see it as a way to get your attention (they don't care whether it's good or bad attention). The better approach is positive reinforcement which is a form of classical conditioning (think Pavlov) where you encourage good behavior (get down) with a positive reward (treats, petting). It takes a lot more learning and effort on your part but you'll have a happier pet/household in the long run.

Karen Pryor https://www.clickertraining.com/ is a great resource on positive reinforcement and if you've ever seen My Cat From Hell, Jackson Galaxy is a great source for happy cat info too. https://www.jacksongalaxy.com/blog/tag/Behavioral+Tips

Again, all advice is appreciated and thank you again.

JMiller - here are a couple of fun pictures of him playing. He LOVES playing in the garden.

Here he is hiding way back in our potato plants - we are both just floored over the size of these potato plants - I hope it means a good harvest!

We called him and here he is peeking out:

Rolling in the grass

He sleeps so soundly that we can walk up to him and take photos and he does not even flinch.

He gets snipped on the 17th LOL and yes he is just too cute and gets away with murder! We thought that he looked like a Barney - we don't know why but it just fit.

Actually he cannot even have water the night before. We moved to Pueblo two years ago and he will have his "procedure" at Veterinary Associates along with a chip. They are the vets that took care of our Daisy in her last day - the nicest and caring folks around.
