My daughter, Sara, is a Public Affairs officer in the Coast Guard, presently stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. She may be sent to help out in the New Orleans Station's PA office at any time in the next three months. There are only 82 PAs in the entire Coast Guard and many are already on temporary duty in the Katrina disaster area. PAs from other stations, as well as Coasties in all job descriptions, will rotate in and out of the disaster area, as needed, to supplement the efforts of those stationed throughout the Gulf coast.

Following are excerpts from an email I received from Sara today.

I spoke to MCPO Coffman. He said T-shirts and socks to the below address is most helpful. Monetary funds can be donated to CG Mutual Assistance or the Coast Guard Foundation.

Sector New Orleans

2301 N. Macarthur

Alexandria, LA. 71301

Attn. MCPO Dave Coffman, ATON

I asked about numbers of people in New Orleans, meaning how many in the PA detachment she may become part of temporarily. Her response:

Many units and people across the Coast Guard have or are actively engaged in supporting the unprecedented efforts that are ongoing in the Eighth District as part of our response to Hurricane Katrina. The operational Coast Guard has performed superbly in every mission area, and as you know, many of our brave men and women involved in these operations are victims themselves along with their families. To give you a sense of the impact on the Coast Guard Family, there are approximately 2600 active duty, 480 selected reserve, 260 Coast Guard civilians, 3100 Auxiliarists and 1250 retirees in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Active duty members in the affected areas alone have more than 4000 dependents.

There are probably at least another 2600 Active duty members from other CG units nationwide augmenting those stationed there.

I first spoke with Sara about Katrina's impact on the Coast Guard last Saturday. That was when she indicated that a pressing need existed for spare T-shirts and socks, due to no laundry facilities and the fact that nobody has time to do laundry, anyway.

We all know a multitude of avenues for assisting the victims of this awful disaster. Here is a way to assist some of those who assist, but need some help, themselves.

P.S. The socks & T-shirts should be dark blue...

We will have a special box for the Coastie goodies, on this Saturday,
the 24th, in front of the Conifer Safeway.
