A1C Kyle Sharp, a US Air Force Tactical Air Control Party member assigned to the 9th Air Support Operations Group at Ft Hood, Tx, was recently awarded the Bronze Star with Valor Device for combat action in Fallujah, Iraq during the fall of 2004.

The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the Armed Forces of the United States after 6 December 1941, distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy; or while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The bronze "V" identifies the award as resulting from an act of combat heroism or "VALOR", thus distinguishing it from meritorious achievement awards.

Earlier this year A1C Sharp was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his efforts in providing air support to the US Army during combat operations in Sadr City.

A1C Sharp is the son of Bailey residents Carl and Sharon Sharp. A1C Sharp entered the Air Force in July 2003.

We recently learned Kyle is heading for Afghanistan at some point in the next week or so to support the 82nd Airborne in combat operations there. He'll be going with 5 other TACP members from his unit and will remain in Afghanistan for approximately 90 days.

Although we worry about him (and all our other guys/gals over there) we're very proud of him and we appreciate the good wishes and prayers that many in our community have offered.

I know there are many other families in Bailey and the surrounding communities with sons and daughters in harms way. We wish them the best.

In January 2006 Kyle completed his combat tour in Afghanistan and was also promoted to Senior Airman.

He tells me that combat operations in Afghanistan against terror targets has been very effective and not widely reported due to the remote locations of many of the engagements. Morale is very high among troops over there.

On Thursday, May 4, 2006 Kyle was named Tactical Air Command and Control Specialist of the Year (2005) for Air Combat Command (ACC). He is the first TACP to ever receive this award.

As most of you might imagine, we're very proud of him and felt the need to share this great news.

Thanks for the continuing show of support and encouragement from those in the community we know and those we don't know. We appreicate it very much.
