Six months after his stepson was killed in the early days of the Iraq war, the dimensions of his grief finally hit Stan Cooper.

"It was like I couldn't move. I just lost it," said the 52-year-old teacher from Thornton.

The cameras were gone; the flood of condolence calls had stopped. Hundreds of letters from around the country overflowed a big plastic box, waiting for a moment when they could be pasted into scrapbooks.

Cooper's stepson, Tommy Slocum, had been the first Colorado casualty in the Iraq war, killed when his armored vehicle was hit at Nasiriyah in the early days of the invasion.

That unwanted distinction has transformed the family's lives. The Coopers have become activists, trying not to let Americans forget the human cost of war.

As the country marks the second anniversary of the Iraq war - it began on March 20 in Iraq, March 19 in the United States - the Coopers were packing for a trip to Washington to view a portrait of their son that will hang at a temporary exhibit at Arlington National Cemetery.

This weekend, and always over the last two years, their war marches to a different rhythm than for Americans who have experienced it mostly through television news.

In the weeks following their son's death on March 23, Terry Cooper was interviewed so many times that friends called the game of spotting her on TV the "Terry Watch."

"She wasn't going to be one of those people you see on TV blubbering with a picture of her son," Stan Cooper said. "She felt that he was a Marine. To honor him, she needed to be strong."

Man, that really brings home why we need to support our people serving in Iraq.
Personnally I am ambigous about the war , But I definately know that these people serving this country need our support. You know how tired you are after a days work and how thankful you are on Friday, looking forward to the weekend?
I dont think the troops get weekends. Some fall to sleep with the sounds of war all around them.

Please help us support our troops, just a letter will do wonders for their morale. Stop by the Conifer Safeway next Saturday the 26 to drop off a letter to the brave Baker Boys of company 506
