From my experience, someone in the Naval Reserve was always kinda looked down upon. So, I was curious as to what some here may say of my service.

I was a Reservist stationed in New Orleans during GWI. I was never called up, and most likely never would have been due to my Rate (Fire Control, thats the kind with weapons not flames). I received an Honorable Discharge after 5 1/2 years.

I feel silly calling myself a Veteran, since I never went into combat and it really was never a possibility. My unit, SIMA San Diego Det. 210, was made of Reservists who had training for complex machines that no "regular Navy" sailor would let a reservist touch. Mostly we were put in a cubby hole until our time was up.

I joined, went to school for 11 months (after Boot Camp). I graduated 3rd in my class, then went back home and used my G.I bill for Tulane University. To be honest I contributed nothing to the Military although that really wasn't my fault; I went were I was told, did what I was told.

Am I a Veteran or was I waste of Government money?

LG, in my book you ARE a "VETERAN", you were at the ready to serve your country as needed whenever the time came to do it.
After I got out of the USAF, I got really bored, so after 8 months out,I joined a guard unit to fly for 2 more yrs. All we did was junk jobs, flying machine parts, people, clothing donations to North Dakota, etc. But we took a load off the regulars picking up their leftover jobs.
We were a medical airlift outfit, with doctors and nurses and medics that never once saw active duty. But I was part of the aircraft team that could always find those junk jobs that still had to be done, no matter how crappy they were.
You were at the ready to do the same if it came to that.

I salute you for your effort.

LG; This makes you a Service Veteran as opposed to a Combat Veteran. Both required your commitment and willingness to perform your assigned duties on behalf of your country.

Both are honorable titles worthy of respect and personal pride.

We salute you. :patriot:

Quite a few people in the military are reservist who have to make great personal sacrifices to serve when needed. Can you imagine, any of you, if the military called you and said you are leaving for BFE tommorow? The bills dont go away, the wife and kids cant come, and maybe you can call home once a week. Hopefully the car wont break down or the house have a major problem while you are gone. Hopefully the military paycheck you will now be getting will cover the bills. All in the name of duty, honor, and country. In the military those words are not conditional, you earn them. You have done more than most Americans. You served, were luck enough to not be activated, but would have gone if called up and served with pride. You have an honorable discharge, and you brother are a vet! :patriot:

You are a young man who was willing and available to do his duty, who trained to be able to do said duty. You are, as Henry said, a Service Veteran, and we honor you. My dad was a military accountant during WWII and saw no "action". But he was willing, available, and trained. He was a Veteran and proud of his service. You should be proud of your service, also.

(You are also a really delightful guy that is articulate, witty, and a pleasure to be around. Who else could be "Brother Jacob" as well? )

Thanks everyone. I just feel rather creepy using the same word to describe myself as some use to describe someone who lost a leg (or worse). Thanks for the clarifications.

Speaking of clarifications, I CAN catch fish, especially in salt water. Also, I thought I was promoted to "Dahli Alpaca"; what gives Mylz?
