Last night my parents were out eating at Red Lobster for my Mom's birthday. My father was wearing his USS Bennington hat this is the boat he was on during World War II.

There was a man that was sitting near them with his son that kept looking over at him and on the way out he stopped to ask if he served in the military. My father replied yes. The man thanked him and my father said I was just doing my duty.

This wonderful man walked out then returned to their table and said he wanted to buy them dinner. They said no that is not necessary he said yes it is and slipped a rather large bill under the napkin on the table.

I don't know who you are but thank you. My parents live on a fixed income and going to dinner is a treat. My father is a very proud to of served in the military and is actively involved in supporting our troops now.

A million words could not express how proud he was last night. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and God Bless.

On 3 of MY vehicles I have Honorably discharged veterans plates.
But on the 4WD I just got , I have Vietnam Veteran plates.
I've gotten more comments on that Vietnam plate than any of my other junkers.

It amazes me that people can even remember the Vietnam War.

Not so amazing my decorated friend.

It's sad yet poignant, that many now are moved to remember the one war in which so many of them begrudged the sacrifices of our soldiers. Time heals wounds of the body, the soul and, yes ... the conscience. The Vietnam veterans are getting their due. Don't fight it, buddy. :USA:

I have been keeping in touch with a Mother of a young man who has recently been deployed to Iraq. Pagcajunmom's son David has left his bootprints, as Pat says, in Germany, Bosnia, Kosovo, Kuwait and Baghdad Iraq. This is his second deployment to Iraq. At this point, Pat does not know where David is exactly. She had hoped he would be home for Christmas this year....she just recently found out that will not be the case.... that he will spend yet another Christmas serving our country in a foreign land and away from his family.

As we do with all our military people serving, please keep Pat and David in your prayers.

Periodically Pat sends me some rather touching things. This is one of them.

The USS Bennington! My father-in-law served on the Bennington during the Korean "conflict". We have a picture of the Bennington in our home that my husband has kept all this time. Small world -

There was a terrible boiler explosion on the Bennington shortly after it pulled out of port with my f-i-l on board. He suffered a severe back injury, but went back to try to save his friends and got a silver star for his efforts. Plus, a staph infection that he carried with him for the next 40 years.

Small world does your father-in-law go to the Bennington reunions? If he does he probably knows my parents.

When it was held here in Colorado several years back may parents sponsored it.

Good for your dad to stay involved. Was he in any of the big battles?

Unfortunately, my F-i-l passed away a few years ago. He was on disabled vet benefits due to his staph infection caused by a navy surgeon and his heart finally gave out. I don't think he ever kept up with anything, and he never talked about his navy time much. He dropped out of high school to join the navy and got his GED while he was in the service. All we have are some crew photos, his old uniform and a photo of the Bennington with its service ribbons.

Sorry to hear about your father in law.

My Dad was in several big battles he lied and joined the service when he was 15. He has tons of pictures one is of a japanese plane that dove straight into the deck.

We have heard his stories over and over and never get tired of them.

He contracted tuberculosis and lost half a lung from it while in the service so he was forced to retire. He also lost part of his hearing because he worked in the engine room.
