I lived in Woodside near Pine Junction since 1993.My experiences varied from roads cleared most of the time to 4 hour commutes because of accidents or cars just clogging up the road. The upside is the area is a nice area, Downside mainly only one main road access. I always had a 4X4 for the snow days and a car for an economy. Besides the drive being stressful and the extra associated expense on the snow and ice days generally overall it was good.

I commute three days a week and leave really early. Mostly the roads are plowed or at least scraped. Windy Point, however is an incredibly dangerous place.

SO many accidents on snowy days and it's a toss-up: cars ill-equipped for the driving conditions, people driving too fast, people who think 4-wheel drive means 4-wheel stop, commercial drivers whose trucks aren't chained, lots of reasons.

The bigger problem is if my plow-guy has cleared my extremely long driveway. Lots to consider.

Let's not forget snowy-day's alter ego - fire season.

It would take a lot to get me out of the mountains, though!

The commute can be tedious.
There is an occasional scary moment.
You have to take some chances against the elements.

But the quality of life up here makes it all worthwhile.
Waking up on a morning like this with a dark blue sky,
trees gleaming with gold, a bunny in the driveway and
deer poking through the creek is just amazing.

Thanks for all the great replies, I really appreciate it. Waiting for our daughter to finish college before we move. We currently live in Arvada and it's growing so fast, so sick of all the traffic but would like to keep my job in Downtown. Sounds like RTD might be the way to go. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions as we get closer to really moving. Been to Pine a few times to check it out and you all are so lucky to live there, it's really beautiful!

Before I moved up here, I stayed at a bed and breakfast (Meadow Creek) for a week to be sure I could handle the commute. I recommend that if it's possible.

Regarding my previous reply I said I lived from 1993, We no longer live in Woodside full time.(funny thing is the person we bought our house from left for the same reason) The commute the stress got a bit to much after many years. The plus was the area being very nice and rural. The long commute and cost of vehicles was getting to be not worth it any more. The response by aspenleaf made a lot of sense. May I add do it in the winter. Be aware if you use gas or electric to heat your home that the lower temps up here will cost you much more in utilities than down below.
