Pretty big storm from the the Pacific will move into the Bering Sea on Thursday and bring strong southerly winds and snow to western AK, keeping temps fairly mild. Snow and wind let up towards the weekend, then fair and cooler weather expected most of next week.

Holy dogsled! I didn't see that one coming.
Jeff King is on the move too. I bet he slips into 2nd place here soon. Aliy must be getting some sleep in Takotna. Isn't there a mandatory rest stop soon? Or can they do their layovers where ever they like. I forget. _________________ All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. ~Edmund Burke~ ******** Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. ~Margaret Mead~ |

their 24 can be anywhere
martin took it early - wonder if that's strategy or another reason the 8 hr has some stipulation (on the yukon? or before they leave the yukon? - have to look that up) |

Quote: Rule 13 -- Mandatory Stops: A musher must personally sign in and out to start and complete all mandatory stops. Twenty Four-Hour Stop: A musher must take one mandatory twenty-four (24) hour stop during the race. The twenty-four (24) hour stop may be taken at the musher’s option at a time most beneficial to the dogs. The starting differential will be adjusted during each team’s twenty-four (24) hour stop. It is the musher’s responsibility to remain for the entire twenty-four (24) hour period plus starting differential. The ITC will give each musher the required time information prior to leaving the starting line. 2013 Race Rules 7 of 15 Eight Hour Mandatory Stops: In addition to the mandatory twenty-four (24) hour stop, a musher must take one eight (8) hour stop on the Yukon River, including Shageluk in odd numbered years, and one eight (8) hour stop at White Mountain. None of the) mandatory stops may be combined. so 24 can be anywhere 8 must be along yukon and of course, the 8 in white mtn |

Thanks for the rules on the mandatory stops.
I hope Aliy and her team are ok. They have been in Takotna for over 10 hours now (if I am calculating that correctly). Maybe this is her 24 hour stop. Not a bad place to do it; Takotna has 24 hr food available to the mushers.I suspect we will be seeing several leave Takotna here soon. Wish I could stay home and watch, but duty calls

I believe there is also an eight hour manditory rest.
Martin may have done his early if one of his dogs looks "iffy", to rest it, decide whether to drop it. _________________ ♪ You must do the thing you think you cannot do. It's kind of fun to do the impossible. |
