What happened to "Adopt a Highway?" Groups and corporations have a stretch of highway that they clean up. Usually spring is one of the worst times for trash piling up, leftover from the winter and all the spring winds.

Thanks for the nudge here TWLady! I'm going to get my company, http://MarketingTypeGuys.com, signed up to adopt Conifer Road.

Stecat, thanks for the gracious offer of supplies and vests. I just talked to Dave Rogers at King Soopers (thanks Lo-Bay Lady) and he will supply trash bags for us and also importantly he will also let us dispose of the full trash bags at the store. I'll meet him Saturday afternoon to get the bags and see where to dump the trash. I am glad you pointed out about the CDOT rules. There could be some liability if some driver on the highway got distracted by seeing people along the road and had an accident.

I see that MTGuy is going to get his company to adopt Conifer Rd, that's great! I am not sure if the highway is already adopted. I have not noticed any signs about it. Maybe some other business there would like to do that. Free advertising. I would be willing to show up for trash pick.

Beestung, Thanks for getting with King Soopers, and getting the disposal of the debris taken care of. That is a major part of the task. From past experiences it might be better to wait until mid-April to request permission from CDOT, as we can get some pretty heavy snows (like today) all the way through April. I would hate to schedule a date with CDOT and a group of volunteers and not be able to do it due to heavy snows. Just a thought.

Stecat, I agree about the weather. After looking at the links that gsellers posted, it looks like any organized cleanup on the highway has to go through the Adopt-a-Highway program anyway to include some training. I think it also requires a 30-day notice to CDOT prior to doing the work. Maybe some local business or other organization will be willing to adopt that stretch.

Just so we are on the same page, are you still on for Sunday?

It's a shame this topic even needs to be posted. (Bear with an IMHO). Back when I first moved out in the 1970's there was no need to adopt a highway because it was pretty much consider a major sin to trash this beautiful state.
I understand that sometimes things blow out of trash bids, etc. but I live on a county road and there are continually beer cans, bags of trash from fast food restaurants, etc. Things that don't get blown around unless someone blows them out their vehicle window.
Point is...preach to your kids, your neighbors, fellow Pinecam folks (although I think they probably are not culprits), and anyone who would listen that is NOT OK to trash our State.
Backpackers have a motto: "Pack in and pack it out." Seems pretty easy to take the trash home and put it in the can.
